QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

  • 5–10 years experience in renewable energy development or origination in Japan.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Environmental Science, Business Administration, or Economics (preferred).
  • Knowledge of development methodology for large-scale renewable projects.Proven experience in Land acquisition, grid interconnection negotiations,early-stage project screening.
  • Strong understanding of Japanese power market structure, FIP & merchant exposure, grid congestion and curtailment risks.

  • Experience in BESS development preferred

  • Native Japanese & business-level English required 

  • Technical skills to directly contribute to project identification efforts.

  • Excellent presentation skills for diverse audiences, including landowners, government officials, and corporate stakeholders.

  • Effective collaboration with geographically dispersed, cross-functional teams in a high-demand environment.

  • Independent problem-solving abilities for client requests and tasks.

MAIN DUTIES /RESPONSIBILITIES

We are seeking an Origination Manager to lead greenfield project origination efforts in Japan, primarily focused on BESS and selective wind/solar opportunities. This role reports to the CDO and works closely with the origination, investment, technical and commercial teams. 

As an Origination Manager, your primary responsibilities will encompass:

  • Driving greenfield renewables project origination initiatives on wind, solar, and storage projects.
  • Conducting market monitoring and intelligence gathering and analysis to identify project investment opportunities tailored to client needs.
  • Managing client relationships and engaging in dialogue to identify and define investment criteria and communicating project opportunities tailored to these investment criteria.
  • Presenting final project envelopes to investment managers for approval.

Especially understanding of Japanese context for following areas:

  • Japanese grid connection framework (Firm / Non-Firm / N-1)
  • FIP regime and merchant revenue risks
  • Land acquisition strategy and permission lift process / risks
  • Development risk management under Japanese regulatory structure

YOUR DAY TO DAY RESPONSIBILITIES

As an Origination Manager, you are responsible for identifying project opportunities based on requirements from investors. These may include IRR requirements, risk profile, offtake (tenure, volumes), timeline, CAPEX requirements, including equity deployment requirements, and project types, including technology type and whether it is looking at greenfield, repowering or acquisitions. You job will be to work with the existing highly skilled Origination team to translate investment requirements into investment opportunities and present these to our investors. This will include:


  • Conduct analysis and review project fundamentals, including:
    • Screen for suitable sites to host a wind, solar and battery projects.
    • Review environmental, permitting and land risks and potential obstacles.
    • Assess and define project economics and financial metrics, such as LCoE, IRR, capture prices, CAPEX/OPEX etc.
    • Analyze interconnection options and review risks of congestion and curtailment.
  • Work with specialists from other departments to assess project fundamentals in detail.
  • Create reporting and presentation materials about project opportunities and present these to investors.
  • Contribute to a positive work environment within the department.
  • Categorize and monitor origination leads to ensure a sufficient pipeline of projects is always available.
  • Collaborate with development directors and investment managers to define project opportunities and ensure alignment on the types of projects to be originated.
  • Manage a stage gate process for the generated project leads.
  • Support the handover to the development department, who will progress the project though development until the FID.
